Amazon’s wind farm begins operations

The Amazon-backed Hawkesdale Wind Farm in south-west Victoria has commenced commercial operations, adding 97 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity to the grid.

The project, located 30 kilometres north-west of Warrnambool, is expected to generate approximately 337,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of carbon-free energy annually – enough to power an estimated 67,000 Victorian homes each year.

Supported by the e-commerce giant, the wind farm is part of the company’s broader commitment to sustainability and renewable energy investment.

Amazon has pledged to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and is supporting multiple renewable projects across Australia.

This marks the first utility-scale renewable energy project it has enabled in Victoria, adding to its portfolio of solar farms in New South Wales and Queensland, as well as rooftop solar installations on its facilities in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth.

Michael Cooley, Amazon Australia’s Director of Public Policy, emphasised the company’s role in accelerating the transition to clean energy.

“Amazon is committed to driving the carbon-free energy transition forward, both to advance our Climate Pledge goals and support Australia’s shift towards more sustainable energy sources. As global energy demands continue to grow, we’re focused on bringing new sources of solar and wind energy to the country,” he said.

The Hawkesdale Wind Farm is owned and operated by GPG Australia, the international energy generation arm of Spain-based Naturgy Energy Group.

The project also featured an innovative approach to infrastructure development, using helicopters to string transmission lines – an effort designed to minimise environmental impact and protect cultural heritage sites.

Amazon’s renewable energy initiatives in Australia collectively aim to generate more than one million MWh of carbon-free energy annually, equivalent to powering approximately 175,000 homes. In addition to helping decarbonise the grid, these projects contribute to local communities by supporting job creation and local businesses.
