APA Group has hit a major milestone at its Port Hedland solar farm and battery project.

The company announced on Tuesday that it had installed the last solar panel at its major 45MW solar photovoltaic (PV) generation facility. The project also incorporates a 35MW / 36.7MWh battery energy storage system will accompany the existing Port Hedland power station, which is owned and operated by APA.

The project, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, is expected to supply renewable energy for large mining customers.

“All solar panels are now installed at the Port Hedland solar farm and battery project,” the company said.

“This project is a testament to our commitment to renewable energy solutions.

“Soon, our renewable energy will help power BHP’s port operations.”

The Western Australian Government has committed funding support of $1.5 million for the battery energy storage system as part of its Clean Energy Future Fund (CEFF). The storage system replaces spinning reserve provided by the gas-fired power station (via burning gas), with energy stored in the battery to provide instant support to the grid when needed.

The project is expected to be operational by late 2024.

“Thanks to our partners, Monford Group and Shanghai Electric Group, who have helped bring this project to life,” APA said.
