As the energy sector continues to transition towards net zero emissions, MEGT is well placed to support employers in the oil and gas industry to build a skilled team and maximise any government financial incentives they may be eligible for.
Understanding the skills gap
The latest Clean Energy Generation report from Jobs and Skills Australia reveals a widening skills gap in the clean energy sector, with shortages in jobs for electricians, civil engineering draftspersons, and various technicians.
It estimates that by 2050, Australia will need an extra 85,000 electricians, with about 32,000 of those required in the next seven years.
The building and engineering trades will need a workforce increase of about 40 per cent by 2050, with anticipated shortages in chemical, gas, petroleum, and power generation sectors starting from 2030.
As Australia’s apprenticeship experts, MEGT has helped more than 250000 Australian businesses find the right talent, navigate the world of apprenticeships and access financial assistance for employers via the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System.
Financial incentives for employers
Designed to support employers that provide quality training opportunities to help address skills shortages, the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System offers a range of financial incentives, including the Priority Hiring Incentive and Disability Australian Apprentice Wage Support (DAAWS).
The Priority Hiring Incentive supports employers to hire Australian Apprentices in priority occupations, including the clean energy sector. It is open to employers whose apprentices commence or recommence from 1 July 2024 and is targeted to the first year of the Australian Apprenticeship.
Eligible employers can claim up to a maximum of $5000 for full-time apprentices and $2500 for part-time apprentices.
DAAWS is a weekly payment to employers who employ apprentices living with disability. Employers can receive up to $104.30 per week. Eligibility criteria apply.
State governments are also actively addressing local skills shortages and offer a range of incentives to support the employment of apprentices.
MEGT’s Apprentice Connect Provider team can help you identify incentives your business or apprentice may potentially be eligible for and help with the claims process.
Financial incentives for apprentices
Australian apprentices who start a clean energy qualification pathway may potentially be eligible for the New Energy Apprentice Support Payment of up to $10,000 over the life of the apprenticeship.
This financial support is designed to help both apprentices and clean energy employers looking to gain a competitive edge.
