Aggreko is supplying supplementary power for electric submersible pumps (ESPs) and aged turbines, ensuring customer production does not experience down-time.
As characteristics of a field changes, operators can experience an increased power demand for artificial lifts in order to maximise production. Aged gas turbines can cause production limitations due to the power gap materially affecting the profitability of the platform.
When operators send these aged gas turbines for maintenance, an alternative source of power is required, otherwise their production gets interrupted.
Through its innovative solutions, Aggreko can provide supplementary power using either diesel, gas, or battery storage, bridging this energy gap.
The company’s equipment can also be synced with operator gas turbines to load share through a variety of methods.
For ESPs, Aggreko can also engineer and implement micro grid solutions, distributing the power out to wells.
“Our individual gensets are extremely reliable even in harsh conditions, but a microgrid solution reduces the per cent redundancy required, improved fuel consumption by running the correct number of engines to match the load, and thus reduce operations costs to the operator,” Aggreko Head of Sales Asia, Chandran Jayabalan said.
Jayabalan said the company’s rental solutions can support a variety of applications, ensuring production is optimised.
“When operating on mature fields, the designed ORIGINAL power capacity on offshore platforms are often over specified.
“Running gas turbines at sub-par capacity is highly energy inefficient. Right sizing to your power requirements is an easy first step in the journey of energy transition.”
For more critical operations such as high producing wells, an ESP can be supported by synchronised generators by operating on a load sharing basis.
Whereas, for higher capacity ESPs without a variable speed drive (VSD), the company can deploy a load demand technique.
“Aggreko has temporary power nodes offered in varied capacities to provide power as a service for this specific purpose. We match the power provision to align with your operational base-load. No excess energy, no excess cost and no excess emissions.”
When it comes to providing supplementary power, Aggreko has extensive experience in supporting a variety of applications. Here are a few examples of how Aggreko’s solution can be applied.
Offshore gas turbine inefficiency solved
In the Netherlands, an offshore platform had two oversized gas turbine main engines of 4.3 megawatts (MW) in total power each, which led to power inefficiencies. Specifically, one of the existing gas turbines had a low efficiency of 14 per cent.
By turning off this inefficiently turbine, a backup solution was needed for the remaining turbine, which is where Aggreko stepped in.
The company installed two MW gas generators in parallel with the remaining gas turbine before ensuring the power size requirement was met with associated petroleum gas (APG).
With this solution provided, the customer no longer needed to care for their costly and inefficient turbine. It also optimised costs for the platform, resulting in higher efficiency and decreased emissions.
Extra offshore power
An offshore platform operator in the North Sea needed to increase its well output on one platform.
Extra water injection pumps were required, however, each would need extra power for the equipment to operate.
With no additional power available and the platform earmarked for future decommissioning, a bespoke solution was needed.
Aggreko worked closely with the customer to create a solution that would remedy the challenge as well as provide ample power for multiple requirements.
The company provided a tailored package consisting of five low voltage generators and two step up high voltage transformers, which provided plenty of power to increase well output as well as for the decommissioning process.
Once tested, the Aggreko team provided a 24/7 presence on the platform to monitor performance and maintenance of the solution.
