The Barrow Dampier carbon capture and storage (CCS) regional study will receive $22 million from Chevron Australia to identify new opportunities in the Carnarvon Basin.
SLB, which leads the study, will put the funding towards a three-dimensional seismic and storage assessment for opportunities in offshore Western Australia.
The company’s General Manager Asset Development, Michelle LaPoint, said that Chevron continues to have confidence in the use of CCS for reducing emissions, based on its experience with CCS in Australia, which includes the Gorgon project.
Chevron has also committed $16 million to support developing infrastructure at Victoria’s Otway International Test Centre, which is managed by CCS research organisation CO2CRC.
The $16 million will facilitate testing of CO2 migration help to validate new modelling techniques to improve CCS storage processes in the future.
The funding sees Chevron fulfil its commitments made to the Joint Authority for the Commonwealth and South Australia with regards to operations in the Great Australian Bight.
“Chevron has decades of operational experience, a proven track record of carbon-capture projects and is already deploying CCS technologies in locations across the globe,” said LaPoint.
Dr Matthias Raab, CEO for CO2CRC agreed, saying that The Otway International Test Centre remains a critical component of CCS research that will support Australia’s transition towards net zero.
