Cliff Head JV submits first Australian CCS project plan

Clidd Head Joint Venture

The Cliff Head Joint Venture (CHJV) has lodged a submission for regulatory approvals for its offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) project.

The CHJV – consisting of Pilot Energy and Triangle Energy – made its submission to the National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA) on 29 November, making it the first in Australia to do so.

The submission is to declare an identified greenhouse gas storage formation in the JV’s permit area WA-31-L.

Regulatory approval will trigger a reshuffle of the CHJV, resulting in Pilot holding a 60 per cent direct operated participating interest in the CHJV oil project and the CH CCS project, while Triangle will hold a 40 per cent direct participating interest in both.

The CHJV has announced an upgrade to the CO2 storage resource, enabling initial injection of 665,000 tonnes per annum for 15 year – approximately 9.7 million tonnes.

The CHJV has stressed that, due to the submission being among the first, the submission was made with a conservative estimate of the CO2 storage potential across the area.

Once key steps are taken, the CHJV will pursue a final investment decision for the CH CCS.
