Construction is officially underway on the Kwinana Gas Power Generation 2 Project (K2) in Western Australia, marking a major milestone as the project transitions from planning into active delivery.
The expansion, being developed by AGL Energy through its subsidiary Western Energy, will see the installation of four new open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) at the existing Kwinana site, located 40 km south of Perth. The engineering, procurement, and construction contract has been awarded to Clough, a subsidiary of the Webuild Group, with full operations targeted to commence in late 2027.
Once complete, the K2 facility will add between 220 MW and 250 MW of nominal generation capacity to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS). When combined with the existing 120 MW Kwinana Swift Power Station, the site’s total capacity will jump to approximately 340–370 MW.
Designed for maximum flexibility, these fast-start “peaking” turbines can fire up rapidly to provide critical backup power during times of peak demand or when weather-dependent renewable generation drops. Crucially, the technology is future-proofed to support alternative fuel blends, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and hydrogen mixes.
The project represents a significant investment in Western Australia’s energy infrastructure and will support more than 200 local jobs during its peak construction phase. It also aligns directly with the WA Government’s commitment to retire all state-owned coal-fired power stations by 2030, operating under strict environmental guidelines to progressively reduce emissions toward a net-zero target by 2050.
