Energy Vault bets big on NSW battery energy storage

Energy Vault, in partnership with Australian developer Enervest, has reached a major milestone in expanding its energy storage capabilities in Australia.

The companies have secured the Stoney Creek Battery Energy Storage Systеm (BESS), a 1GWh project worth $350 million, located in Narrabri, New South Wales.

The project has been confirmed as an eight-hour duration systеm, making it one of the largest long-duration energy storage solutions in the state.

According to Energy Vault, the Stoney Creek BESS, awarded a 14-year long-term energy service agreement by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) Services, will play a critical role in supporting New South Wales’ renewable energy integration and decarbonisation goals.

The project is designed to provide large-scale, dispatchable energy storage, which will enhance grid stability, reduce renewable energy curtailment, and contribute to wholesale price stability.

As part of Energy Vault’s own and operate strategy, this project is part of a growing portfolio in Australia, complementing 2.6GWh of other projects under development.

With this project, Energy Vault continues to demonstrate its global expertise in designing, building, and operating energy storage systеms, ensuring both safety and reliability while driving down capital and operational costs.

The Stoney Creek BESS will also support New South Wales’ Renewable Energy Roadmap by providing critical infrastructure to ensure long-term grid resilience and systеm reliability.

With the site fully secured and regulatory approvals progressing, the project is expected to begin pre-construction and final design activities in late 2025.

In addition to its technical significance, the project will create around 150 jobs during peak construction, with four full-time roles post-completion.

Energy Vault and Enervest have committed to collaborating with local communities and Indigenous groups to maximise the long-term benefits of the Stoney Creek BESS for the region.
