IntelliGas wins gold for HDCNG technology

IntelliGas and Mine Energy Solutions’ work on high density compressed natural gas (HDCNG) for heavy commercial vehicle applications has been acknowledged with the Gold Award at the 2015 SAE-A Mobility Engineering Excellence Awards.

This award recognises the highest levels of innovation and engineering excellence in Australia within the automotive industry.

Gas Energy Australia’s CEO John Griffiths congratulated IntelliGas/Mine Energy Solutions on the award and said “recognition of Australian innovation in gas technology for heavy commercial vehicles is an exciting advancement for Australia’s gaseous fuels industry, the economy and our air quality”?.

The use of HDCNG, which provides an alternative to diesel for heavy vehicle application, impressed the judges with the sustainability benefits the system will provide. Natural gas produces 27 per cent less greenhouse emissions compared with diesel.

HDCNG technology, along with engine management units, enable heavy vehicles powered by natural gas to achieve similar power, torque and fuel consumption outcomes as 100 per cent diesel fuelled engines.

IntelliGas, an Australian owned company specialising in the application of compressed natural gas fuel solutions for mobile and stationary energy systems, conducted field trials of a dual fuel mine truck at Morayfield Queensland in May 2015 that attracted more than 150 government and industry representatives from the mining and gas industries over 10 demonstration days.

With the articulated truck fleet growing by over 15 per cent over the last 5 years and given the long distances travelled in Australia, great potential exists for cleaner and cheaper gaseous fuels to increase national competitiveness, support economic growth and improve environmental outcomes.

“Natural gas is an abundant, Australian fuel that is well positioned to improve our country’s energy security, environment and public health as a viable alternative to imported diesel, and I congratulate the team at IntelliGas/MES on demonstrating the leadership in innovation this award recognises,”? Mr Griffiths said.
