Moomba CCS on global stage

The Moomba carbon capture and storage (CCS) project has received critical acclaim at an international industry event in Singapore.

The Moomba CCS project is a joint venture between Beach Energy and Santos, and has already safely and securely stored more than 800,000t of CO2 underground.

It was recognised as the key driver behind the winning Santos nomination for the Energy Council’s annual APAC Awards in Singapore.

Nominees were identified by a panel of 25 judges before three finalists were chosen. The other two finalists were PETRONAS (Malaysia based) and GTT Technologies (German based).

Brett Woods, Beach Energy managing director and CEO said he was pleased to see Moomba receive international recognition as a frontrunner towards carbon abatement, which is critical not just for Australia but also the Asia-Pacific region.

“The successful launch and start-up of Moomba CCS displays irrefutable proof that Australia can provide much needed energy to drive our economy while at the same time progress towards our decarbonisation targets,” Woods said.

“Carbon capture and storage is a critical enabler for low emissions energy supply and puts Beach Energy on track to achieve our 2030 emissions intensity reduction target of 35 per cent.

“The Federal Government should assist the broad scale deployment of CCS by increasing its support and ensuring all CCS projects are able to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) while also contributing towards net zero targets.”

The Energy Technology Company of the Year Award category is awarded to a leading company for “recognising groundbreaking innovation or development of technologies that pave the way for a more sustainable and profitable future for the APAC energy industry.”

The awards were held as the culmination of the Energy Council’s APAC Energy Capital Assembly between 9-10 June 2025.
