The Federal Government has granted final approval for a sweeping wind farm development on Robbins Island, off north‑west Tasmania, marking a pivotal boost for Australia’s clean energy trajectory.
With up to 100 turbines planned, the project is designed to deliver enough power for roughly 422,000 homes, significantly enhancing national renewable capacity.
Environment and Water Minister Murray Watt described the project as a turning point in advancing Australia’s transition away from fossil fuels, noting it could reduce greenhouse emissions by 3.4 million tonnes annually, an impact comparable to removing over one million cars from the roads. ACEN Australia, the project’s developer, emphasised that Robbins Island possesses an exceptional resource, capable of generating 30 per cent more power than typical wind projects of its size.
Valued at approximately $3 billion – one of Tasmania’s largest private investments – the project is expected to stimulate the regional economy, creating between 350 to 400 construction jobs and providing hundreds of millions in economic activity, including a multi‑million‑dollar community benefits package.
The government anticipates the wind farm will begin feeding the grid by 2030–2031, pending approval of a separate transmission line expected in 2026. By doing so, the initiative not only supports Tasmania’s goal of doubling clean energy output by 2040 but also strengthens Australia’s broader emissions reduction targets and energy security
