Northern Territory gas pipeline reaches next milestone

More jobs in the Northern Territory’s resources sector are on the away after the government granted Australian energy company Jemena a pipeline licence for the Northern Gas Pipeline project.

The pipeline, around 622km long, will join Tennant Creek in the NT to Mount Isa in Queensland.

Minister for primary industry and resources Ken Vowles announced the licence approval as well as a grant enabling the construction of the Phillip Creek Station Compressor Facility north of Tennant Creek.

Vowles said the project will provide around 900 jobs during construction and reinforce the government’s plans to make Tennant Creek a resources industry services hub.

Vowles added that an assessment of the Pipeline Management Plan including the Environmental Management Plan and an independent review was conducted.

“It is a priority of government that the pipeline be constructed in such a way that it delivers safe and secure infrastructure that meets the requirements of the Northern Territory,” he said.

The NT Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) also assessed the pipeline’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and recommended that approval be given to construct and operate the pipeline.

In April, the NT Government committed to fund a feasibility study into the development of a common user mine and processing facility in Tennant Creek, to assist small mining operations with their processing costs.
