The New South Wales Government has established the Net Zero Commission, an independent, expert body overseeing the state’s progress towards emissions reduction targets.

The commission’s primary responsibilities include monitoring whole-of-economy progress towards emissions reduction targets and adaptation objectives, providing expert advice on climate change mitigation strategies, and educating various stakeholders on promoting climate action.

The newly appointed commission comprises a diverse group of experts with backgrounds in climate science, economics, finance, technology, engineering, public administration, and representation of Aboriginal and rural communities. Dr. Paul Grimes PSM has been named as the Commission’s Chair.

Penny Sharpe, NSW’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy said she’s thrilled to announce the appointment of these exceptional, eminent individuals to lead the Net Zero Commission.

“Their appointments demonstrate the Minns Labor Government’s unwavering commitment to securing a sustainable and thriving future for NSW’s people, economy, and environment,” Sharpe said.

“The strong, independent Net Zero Commission will provide us with expert assessments of our progress in achieving our net zero goals and adapting to our changing climate.

“The Commission will consider all perspectives and help bring government, business and community along the journey towards our ambitious net zero goals.”

Notable appointments to the commission include Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte, the NSW Chief Scientist, who will serve as an ex-officio member to provide whole-of-government scientific advice.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the Net Zero Commission will report directly to the NSW Parliament through the recently established Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Net Zero Future.

The commission is required to prepare annual progress reports and consult with the future NSW Agriculture Commissioner as part of this process.
