SuperGrid Link underway in QLD

SuperGrid construction commences

Construction has kicked off on Queensland’s SuperGrid Link with $40 million of support from the state government’s Energy and Jobs Plan.

The SuperGrid link will connect Cairns and Townsville. It is the first in the North Queensland Renewable Energy Zone and will capitalise on the massive wind resources of the area.

Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Mick de Brenni said that the SuperGrid will improve the reliability, security and affordability of energy in north Queensland.

The project forms part of the publicly-owned Powerlink project, backed by $40 million from Palaszczuk Government, that will more than double the capacity of the current coastal transmission line.

“This new SuperGrid Link also improves grid reliability for North Queenslanders to better manage extreme weather events such as storms and cyclones,” de Brenni said.

Member for Cairns Michael Healy said the project paves the way for the state to become a true renewable energy powerhouse.

“By 2032 it means 70 per cent of Queensland’s energy supply will be renewable – taking real action on climate change, protecting the reef, and responding to worsening natural disasters,” Healy said. “Our plan reduces household and business electricity emissions by an incredible 96 per cent by 2040.”
