Townsville tourism mainstay locks in renewable supply

The Ville Resort-Casino in Townsville has signed a 10,000 megawatt-hour (MWh) renewable energy deal with CleanCo.

The energy deal with see The Ville precinct powered entirely by renewable energy by 2025.

CleanCo is a government-owned electricity generation and trading company with a mix of renewable energy and innovative energy solutions.

Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Mick de Brenni announced the deal at the Queensland Energy and Jobs Fair in Townsville as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s Energy and Jobs Plan.

“North Queensland has world-class renewable energy sources, and through publicly owned corporations like CleanCo, we are making those resources available to support our industries and communities to make the switch to renewable energy,” he said.

The Ville was the first customer in Townsville to sign a clean energy supply agreement with CleanCo and with the pace of renewables coming online there’ll be plenty more to come.”

According to CEO Tom Metcalfe, CleanCo is able to offer reliable, competitively-priced clean energy due to its mix of low-emission firming capability, wind and solar generation.

“We have a number of generating assets in north Queensland and I am proud that we are able to use these locally operated assets to provide locally sourced renewable energy for businesses like The Ville, as they pursue their sustainability goals,” he said.
