Woodside Energy has achieved first oil at the Sangomar field offshore Senegal, the first offshore oil project for the country.
The Sangomar Field Development Phase 1 is a deepwater project including a stand-alone floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facility.
Woodside Energy chief executive officer Meg O’Neill said the milestone was a historic day for Senegal and the company.
“First oil from the Sangomar field is a key milestone and reflects delivery against our strategy,” O’Neill said.
“The Sangomar project is expected to generate shareholder value within the terms of the production sharing contract.”
O’Neill noted that delivering Senegal’s first offshore oil project safely was a testament to Woodside’s project execution capability.
“We are proud of the relationships we have formed with PETROSEN, the Government of Senegal and our key international and local contractors to develop this nationally significant resource,” she said.
In January 2024, the Léopold Sédar Senghor FPSO officially set sail for Senegal, where it travelled 12,000 nautical miles from Singapore to its final destination, approximately 100 kilometres offshore Dakar, Senegal.
The FPSO, named after Senegal’s first president, Leopold Sédar Sengho, arrived at its final destination in February 2024.
Development of the Sangomar field first commenced in 2020.
