Woodside awards largest ever indigenous contract to Winyama

Beetaloo Basin, scarborough

Woodside has awarded its largest ever Traditional Owner construction contract to Winyama Contracting Group, a Karratha-based and Indigenous-led firm, for civil works on the Pluto Train 1 Modifications project.

This project is part of Woodside’s larger Scarborough Energy Project, aiming to expand processing capacity at its Pluto LNG facility.

Winyama Contracting Group, a local company with strong Indigenous ownership, will collaborate with Woodside’s primary contractor, Kellogg Brown & Root, on this substantial project.

The contract was awarded through a competitive bid process, emphasising experience, local content, and health, safety, and environmental (HSE) performance.

The contract will not only strengthen Winyama’s business capabilities but also create new employment and training opportunities for Indigenous workers.

Woodside Pluto Expansion Project Manager Paul Baker said Woodside was pleased to be partnering with Winyama Contracting Group for the delivery of the civil works for the Pluto Train 1 modifications and supporting the delivery of local business and employment outcomes for the Pilbara.

“By engaging a local Indigenous led and owned contractor, we’re securing the delivery of an important service while contributing to the local economy. The contract will also support the growth of Winyama Contracting Group, increasing the company’s capacity to deliver services to other industries across the Pilbara,” he said.

Winyama Contracting Group described the agreement as a major milestone, allowing the company to expand by adding approximately 65 new employees, most of whom will be locally based.

“Being part of the Pluto Train 1 Modifications project supports our vision to expand within the region and increase our focus on Aboriginal outcomes through our Reflection Reconciliation Action Plan,” the company said.

Since its inception, Woodside’s Scarborough Energy Project has awarded over A$3.6 billion in contracts to Western Australian businesses, with A$115 million invested directly into Karratha-based enterprises.
